Artificial Artificial Intelligence OR There's Something about Randomness (acting on things with inherent structure)

(Bear with me on this - at the end I'll be giving you two MAX/MSP Runtime patches that will work with the special, free, mono edition of MegaDelayMass - MegaDelayMassCM that we made for Computer Music UK magazine - I’ll even include a copy of MegaDelayMassCM in the download bundle)

We've been thinking about randomness a lot around the office. (Okay - honestly, I don't think Edmund thinks about... Read Full Article

Year End Wrap Up

It's been a very exciting year for us. We built a new website, launched not one, not two, but three new products, got a bunch of really nice reviews and most recently made a version of MegaDelayMass for Computer Music UK to give away (aka MegaDelayMassCM - and there was much rejoicing)

I thought it might be a good time to look over some of the nice things that were written about our work over the past six months - it's hard to believe that this has all been happening only since June!

What is “Pro” Audio Anyway

I have been listening to more and more “professionally” produced recordings (commercial and locally produced) that make my ears bleed. Ok not bleed, but hurt. Ok not hurt but just want to close up and fall off.

I started thinking about how audio recording gear gets better and better and better. And cheaper and cheaper and cheaper. But that is not translating into better recordings. It is truly amazing what kind of quality can be had (relatively speaking) with a $200 interface, a good... Read Full Article

"It's All About Control..."

We've just released our new 100 tap delay MegaDelayMass (MDM) to the world, and I wanted to point out something that I think is kind of extraordinary.

If you go to the MegaDelayMass product page
http://intdevices.com/proaudio/product/show/17/
and play the first few audio examples (there's a "dry" drum loop an "executive summary" of the thing I'm about to discuss and a longer version of the same audio). - as an... Read Full Article

Welcome Back

Some of you have been asking about when we would release new products for a while now (you know who you are). Some of you have waited patiently, some of you gave up and moved on (we understand). Well here we are.

For those of you who don’t know us: We always are interested in doing new things. Different things. Fun things. We are not into doing “me too” products. And we are always interested in maintaining the HIGHEST QUALITY of audio. In a world where MP3 and compression are the... Read Full Article

The Spirit of St.Croix

This is a personal blurb from me about my friend and business partner of many MANY years, Stephen St.Croix. Some of you will be very familiar with him from his years of writing, agitating, pushing, and being a no bull evaluator of all things audio (and toys….I mean professional tools) from his Mix column. I knew him as a mentor, friend and someone with whom I butted heads with daily (believe me my head still hurts).

He taught me a lot about audio. But the most important thing he taught... Read Full Article

What are we thinking?

We cover a lot of different territory here at ID. Our interests are wide and varied - from writing and performing music to music recording and production, to digital signal processing to artificial intelligence, we've got opinions on many different topics, and generally aren't afraid to share them.

That's why we thought it was important to have an area of the site where we could post occasional articles relating to our thoughts on various current audio issues and other things. In the... Read Full Article

Death of Satellite Radio

When XM and Sirius first appeared on the scene I was very excited. Here was a new method for listening to music, one not constrained by the mega-programming, payola driven, ad based homogeny. And for a shiny brief period of time I was in love with satellite radio. It didn’t matter what kind of music you liked, you could find stuff on XM and Sirius that you couldn’t find anywhere else in a “radio” format (not counting internet radio, which is kind of tough to listen to in the middle of the...
